10 Ways to Be a Better Manager
10 Ways to Be a Better Manager10 Ways to Be a Better ManagerManaging is a skill that can be learned. Every day, pick just one of these 10 ways to improve your skills.Work on it. Then pick another one. Youll be a better manager before you know it, and others will notice, too. Select the Best People As a manager, you are only as good as the people on your team. Give yourself a better chance to succeed by picking the best people from the start. Be a Motivator Human beings do things because they want to. Sometimes they only want to because the consequences of not doing it are sure to be unpleasant. However, most of the time they do things because of what they get out of it. Its no different at work. People do good work for pay, prestige, or recognition. They do bad work because they want to take it easy and still get paid. They work hard because they want to impress someone. To motivate your people, figure out what motivates them, and give them that if you can. Build Your Team It is not enough that each part is motivated to succeed. They need to work together as a team to accomplish the groups objective. If they could get it done individually, they wouldnt need you to manage them. Improve your team building skills. Be a Leader You have built the best team from the best employee available. You motivated them to peak performance. What is missing? Motivating a team is useless unless you provide direction. You need to turn that motivation towards a goal and lead the team to it. It is the ability to lead others that truly sets a manager apart. Leaders are found at all levels of the organization. You want to be one of them. Be a Communicator Communication may be the single most important skill of a manager. You cant be a leader if you cant communicate your vision. You cant motivate people if they cant understand what you want. Communication skills can be improved through practice. Work on getting your point across. Keep an Eye on the Money Most ma nagers are expected to help the company make money, directly or indirectly. That means bringing money in the door and spending less than you bring in. Depending on your function in the organization, you may have more influence on one area or the other, but you need to understand both. You can help your company, your employees, and yourself by getting better at managing the companys money. Dont be put off by the fact that its math. If you dont know the basics of money management, start learning. Keep an Eye on the Time The one thing you will probably have less of at work than money is time. The better you get at managing time, your own and that of others, the more effective you will be as a manager. Here are two key skills. You dont need a degree in project management, but you might benefit from a course in project management 101. Improve Yourself Dont focus so hard on your people that you forget about yourself. Identify the areas in which you are weak and improve them. The f act that you are reading this article shows you understand the concept. You need to put it into practice. Practice Ethical Management Scandals like the collapse of Enron have driven home the point about how important ethics is in business. Whatever you do or dont do, be honest. Be decent. To your team members, to your customers, to your co-workers, and to your bosses. Take a Break You are less effective as a manager if you are over-stressed. You are less tolerant. You snap at people. No one wants to be anywhere near you. Take a break. Give yourself a chance to relax and recharge your batteries. Your increased productivity when you return will more than make up for the time you take off. So have a good laugh or go lie on a beach somewhere.

The Top Resume and Cover Letter Mistakes
The Top Resume and Cover Letter Mistakes The Top Resume and Cover Letter Mistakes Maybe youre making one of these resume or cover letter mistakesFailing to ProofreadWe might be biased, but we think that grammar and spelling errors are the worst. Not only does sloppy grammar make you look unprofessional, but it also speaks to your attention to detail and your ability to communicate in the workplace. Always proofread your job search documents multiple times. The best way to do this is to print them and read them out loud. Grammarlys automated proofreading software can also help you keep your application packet out of the trash bin. According to a 2013 survey by CareerBuilder, 58 percent of hiring managers cited typos as one of the main reasons they rejected a job seekers application, so dont skip proofreadingToo Long or Too ShortPop quiz How long should a resume or cover letter be?If you answered No mora than a page, then youre, well, on the same page as most hiring managers.Googles senior VP of people relations, Laszlo Bock, has a formula for calculating resume length one page for every ten years of relevant work experience. For most job seekers outside of academia or senior management, that means a one-page resume. If squeezing your info onto a single page seems daunting, Scott Dockweiler of The Daily Muse reminds job seekers that a resume doesnt have to (in fact, shouldnt) be a chronicle of your entire career history it should be a marketing document that uses your relevant skills and experiences to illustrate to the hiring manager why youre the one for the job.Highlighting the Wrong DetailsBruce Hurwitz, president of a New York staffing firm, recommends being as specific as possible by focusing on accomplishments instead of job duties. The key is to highlight one success, Hurwitz says of cover letters. For example, I successfully increased sales 500 percent over two years, resulting in increased, sustained revenue of $25 million. Once I read that, I look at the resume.Lack of Tailoring Cover letters and resumes arent one-size-fits-all documents. Using the same generic text for every job application is a great way to ensure you never get a call for an interview.Employers want you to write a resume specifically for them, advises Peter Vogt, a senior contributing writer for Monster. They expect you to clearly show how and why you fit the position in a specific organization.Inconsistent FormattingThink formatting isnt important? Think again. Like sloppy writing, poor formatting shows hiring managers that you lack professionalism and attention to detail. It can also make your resume and cover letter a lot harder to read.Dont let your resume get out of hand with fonts and graphs and distract the reader from whats important (how qualified you are), Christine Ryan Jyotiwrites for Fast Company. If youre going to use bullets, they should be the same size and shape in each section and align from page to page.Burying the LedeIn journalism, the led e is the hook that catches a readers attention. If you bury the lede, you fail to hook your readers in the first words of your story. Your resume and cover letter should have a similar hook. Remember, hiring managers may see hundreds of applications for the same position and most of them will begin with some variation of the words I am writing to you because I want a position at your company. Here are five examples from Glassdoorof first lines that will get your cover letter noticedGrammarly wishes you the best of luck in your job search Leave a comment to let us know which of these tips works best for you.Master the art of closing deals and making placements.
